An Observation of the Masses

As you probably all are aware, last week was Mike Filsaime’s launch of his Butterfly Marketing 2 that he gave away for free, well almost free. The program sells for $1997.00, so $29.95 was less than a drop in the bucket considering you also received the Home Study Course.

This was the first time I had truly felt passionate about getting a new product and was willing to take all day if need be. It turns out that was a reality. His site crashed before the official launch. I understand that a few early bird orders did go through, but not nearly 5,000. You see 5,000 was the original quantity he was offering for free. I jumped over to Ustream before the early bird notice was sent out. I wanted to make absolutely positive that I was one of the 5,000. Like everyone else, I was bombarded with bonus offers and I had already checked each one out and chosen the link I would order through. They were all fantastic offers, so no matter which I you chose, if you chose you made the right decision.

I didn’t log into Ustream, but just observed. When I got there where was around 2,000 people logged in and no telling how many others were just watching the stream. Bob the Teacher jumped on board and tried to answer any questions that he could based on the knowledge he was receiving from Mike and his team and did a wonderful job ‘moderating’.

The early bird announcement was made and as expected, there was a mad dash to get to the site and secure a copy. This was short-lived, though as very shortly after opening, the site was down. Then there is a mad dash back to Ustream. I don’t know exact numbers but 4,000 to 5,000 people logged in might be a good guestimate. Mike announced that he would order more; anyone who ordered on 3/24/08 would get a copy.

If you’ve read any information on internet marketing or listened to any interviews or seminars, you have probably heard there are different groups of people in the internet business circle. That was the observation I made that day, there were three very distinct groups of people waiting to get their hands on this $1997 package for $29.95. To say I was shocked at the reactions of those is an understatement.

The first group is the ones who simply jumped on the bandwagon because everyone else was and it must be the thing to do. They were impatient, somewhat rude, and certainly were all complainers. One of the most shocking statements I heard were from people who didn’t have a clue what they were ordering, things like “What if BFM?”, “What can I do with BFM?” What! How can you be serious about running a business when you don’t know first what you are waiting all day or night for and second, you don’t have a clue what it does? My thought was and remains, if you don’t know what it is, you certainly don’t need it and have no intentions of putting it to any use, let alone good use. Certainly, if you were rude to someone who is basically handing you this fantastic product for pennies, how would you treat your own customers? Kindness goes so much farther than rudeness does. There were a few very negative statements made about Mike Filsaime directly…quite simply if anyone felt that way, why were they there? Quite frankly, they really are just wasting their time having nothing better to do. My best advice to this group is “continue working for the man” and save your $30.00.

The second group of people, these are the ones who want a piece of the pie, but expect it to be handed to them. I don’t believe they have any intention or desire to put forth even part of the effort that is required to build a successful internet (or offline) business.

The second group appeared to be serious about their business, but in reality their negative attitude spoke volumes and certainly sets them up for failure before even starting. These are the ones with the infinite excuses. “I’m wasting time, “I’ve been up all night”, “I’m tired of just waiting come on already lets this moving”, “This Butterfly Marketing better be worth all the hassle”,

One common topic throughout this group of Whiner’s was “They don’t take PayPal”. Come on people, why not do your research before the day of the launch. I’m sure there were some true go-getters who could not work around this option, but for the most part, it’s just plain poor knowledge (or just another “excuse”). If you use exclusively PayPal, that’s cool, did you know you can get a debit card for this account, providing you have a business account, and if you’re in business, it’s a pretty good bet you do. The debit card works just like a credit card and draws off the balance of your PayPal account. Excuse #2, but I don’t keep a balance in PayPal. Guess what, neither do I, but you could have transferred $30 to have it available for this particular launch. And speaking of debit cards, if you have a business account with PayPal it has to be connected to your bank account and/or credit card account, or both. I’m pretty sure that all of the banks offer debit cards. Again, this can be used just like a credit card. Two simple answers to “Why won’t you take PayPal?” One more excuse to not being successful.

The truth is, if you want something bad enough, you’ll find a way to get it. Think about that statement. I’m sure that everyone can come up with one example of wanting something bad enough, that they find a way to get it. It might be a pair of shoes, or a new stereo system for your car, I guarantee you can think of something (or many things).

If you want to succeed in business you have to have that kind of passion, that kind of positive attitude to find a way instead of finding excuses why you can’t. With all the effort that is put into making excuses as to why I can’t, think how much could be accomplished with a change in thought to I can!

The third group is the successful people. Positive attitude and passion for what they believe in, passionate about obtaining the life of their dreams, and most importantly working towards that goal. They knew the value that was being offered and were willing to hang out and chat or just come back later. This group chatted amongst themselves while waiting for the announcement that the site was back up and they could order. Once it was announced that more copies were being ordered and everyone who ordered on launch day would get a copy, this group pretty much went about their business. My choice was to check the website later, I did, and I did order a copy. I wasn’t angry or upset that I spent several hours hanging out just observing the chatter on Ustream. I knew full well I was behind on my other job, but the joy of being self-employed was I had all night to get it done. I knew that the website crashed and this was not some “marketing tactic” as was suggested by some. Mike Filsaime would not be the success he is if he actually employed that kind of marketing tactic. Lastly, I said to my husband, “I know now what to expect and how to better prepare when “It’s my turn”.
